Building Your Band of Brothers: The Power of Male Friendships
October 10 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pmFree
As men leave for college, get a job, get married have children they are realizing they have not been given the skill set needed to handle all the challenges of manhood.
In history, men had a built-in male community of extended family members, villagers, and other men whom they depended on for survival. There was a craft of manhood that was shared among these close-knit bands of brothers.
In modern society, these relationships are no longer built-in. Sometimes before, and certainly after marriage, men’s relationships drop off or deteriorate into what’s called a “rust relationship.” Rust relationships are those that once had meaning but end up being loosely maintained for nostalgia. They do not have enough substance to rely on in any deeper way.
This table is a safe space for men to discuss their male relationships past, current, but most important, future with men who either have 5 men they could call on in a time of desperation or men looking for a band of brothers.
The goal of this discussion is to learn about the serious health risks associated with social isolation that men face by not being socially connected with other men in a real, deep way – and practical ways to go about building your own band of brothers.
